1. Introduction

The Scottish Government has outlined in the Scottish Energy strategy plan that Scotland has a target to generate 100% of its electricity from renewable energy by 2020 [1]. Therefore, in order to pursue this target, renewable energy projects are continuously implemented across different regions in Scotland, resulting in a project proposal for a renewable energy (RE) system on the Island of Great Cumbrae. The following report will present a project plan for the proposed RE system and assessments of the project will be followed.

1.1 Project Aim and Objectives

The project aim is to design a RE system that can fully meet the current and projected electricity demands for the Island of Great Cumbrae, and the project has three goals:

Ensure the RE system can provide a stable electricity output and meet the calculated total annual demand of 11.29 GWh.

Minimise the environmental and social impact that are related to the RE system.

Ensure the RE system is technically and financially viable.

1.2 Project Area

The Island of Great Cumbrae is located off the North Ayrshire coast and accessible by ferry from the mainland city of Largs [2, 3]. The island is around 6.4km long and 3.2km wide, with a boundary of 16.6km by circumference [2, 4]. Great Cumbrae has a population of around 1,800, with the majority of commercial activities being concentrated in Millport in the southern part of the island where most of the habitants live [2, 4]. The main transport link is the circular road around the circumference of the coast that connects the whole island [4].
